Discuss the current situation of the coffee industry in Yunnan, China

The following is a discussion about the status of the coffee industry in Yunnan, China:

1、 Development History

The planting history of coffee in Yunnan can be traced back to 1904, when French missionary Tian Deneng planted the first coffee seedling in Chinese Mainland in Zhukula Village, Binchuan County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture. In 1951, Dehong Luxi Cotton Experiment Station introduced coffee seedlings for the first time and carried out productive planting. In 1955, Yunnan Agricultural Reclamation pioneered the large-scale cultivation of coffee. In 1992, the Yunnan Coffee Factory, a coffee cooperation project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), was completed and put into operation, which was China's first modern coffee factory. In 2011, the price of coffee beans in Yunnan reached its peak, with a quoted price of up to 42 yuan per kilogram. However, it went through an 8-year trough period and the industry was severely affected.

2、 Industry Status

Planting scale and yield: By the end of 2024, the coffee planting area in Yunnan will reach 1.267 million mu, with a yield of 146000 tons, accounting for over 98% of the country's total planting area and yield, firmly ranking first in the country.

Distribution of production areas: mainly distributed in six provinces and cities including Pu'er, Baoshan, Lincang, Dehong, Xishuangbanna, and Nujiang. Among them, the comprehensive output value of Pu'er City in 2024 is 8.508 billion yuan, and the comprehensive output value of Baoshan City's coffee industry has reached 9 billion yuan. The coffee deep processing rate, premium rate, and the number of provincial-level coffee leading enterprises and Yunnan Province's premium coffee plantations all rank first in the province.

Variety structure: In the past, the main variety of coffee planted in Yunnan Province was the Katim series hybrid, accounting for as much as 95%. Since 2022, in accordance with the principle of "suitable location, suitable product, and suitable variety", 1.05 million acres of premium coffee suitable areas have been designated, and excellent varieties such as Guixia, Tiepika, Carduai, and Dere have been recommended. As of the end of 2024, the province has planted over 150000 acres of high-quality coffee varieties, accounting for 12.8%. The single planting structure dominated by Katim Yipin is gradually being reversed.

Premium rate and deep processing rate: In 2024, the premium rate of coffee in the province has increased from 8% in 2021 to 31.6%, and the deep processing rate has increased from 20% in 2021 to 80%, achieving a shift from raw material sales to a balance between raw material and deep processing product sales.

Market sales: Yunnan will export 32500 tons of coffee in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 358%, mainly to 29 countries and regions including the Netherlands, Germany, the United States, and Vietnam. At the same time, the domestic coffee consumption market is also growing rapidly, and the recognition of Yunnan coffee in the domestic market is constantly increasing.

3、 Industrial policy support

In August 2022, Yunnan Province issued the "Several Policies and Measures to Promote the Increase of Coffee Premium Rate and Deep Processing Rate", also known as the "Six Measures for Coffee", proposing six key tasks and support policies, including improving the quality of coffee varieties, centralized harvesting of fresh fruits, developing deep processing, building cloud coffee brands, constructing premium plantations, and increasing financial support, with supporting provincial financial funds. Subsequently, a series of documents including the "Yunnan Province Premium Coffee Plantation Certification Management Measures (Trial)" were issued to increase policy and financial support and promote industrial development.

4、 Industrial development model

Enterprise+Cooperative+Farmer Model: For example, Baoshan Zhongka Food Co., Ltd. focuses on the independent breeding of the "Yunka No.1" variety and has signed a minimum purchase agreement with production areas such as Lujiang Town through this model. The purchase price of fresh fruits reaches 12 yuan/kg, driving an average income increase of over 3000 yuan per coffee farmer.

Coffee tourism integration model: 14 boutique coffee estates have been recognized in the province, and a batch of boutique coffee estates have become popular check-in points for fashion tourism consumption, achieving linkage between the primary, secondary, and tertiary industries. Pu'er Aini Manor integrates planting, processing, tasting, teaching, and tourism experience, and the coffee culture study program is highly sought after by primary and secondary school students.

5、 Existing issues

The problem of single variety still needs improvement: Although the planting area of high-quality varieties has increased, the proportion of Katim varieties is still high, and their quality has certain limitations for the development of high-end specialty coffee, which affects the competitiveness of Yunnan coffee in the international high-end market.

Brand building needs to be strengthened: For a long time, Yunnan coffee has mostly been exported in the form of raw materials or labeled as an international brand to flow globally. Its own brand influence is relatively weak, and its brand awareness and reputation in the international market need to be further improved.

Insufficient coordinated development of various links in the industrial chain: Although Yunnan's coffee industry has achieved certain development in planting, processing, and sales, the synergy between various links in the industrial chain is not strong enough, and there are problems such as disconnection between planting and processing, and poor connection between processing and sales, which have affected the overall efficiency improvement of the industry.

6、 Development prospects

Market demand growth brings opportunities: With the continuous growth of global coffee market demand and the rapid expansion of China's domestic coffee consumption market, it is expected that the size of China's coffee market will exceed one trillion yuan by 2025. As the main coffee producing area in China, Yunnan coffee is expected to benefit from market growth and gain broader development space.

Refined development enhances competitiveness: Yunnan coffee will continuously improve its premium rate and deep processing rate, enhance coffee quality and added value by promoting the strategy of refined development. This will better meet the market's demand for high-quality coffee and continuously enhance its competitiveness in the international market.

Expanding space for industrial integration development: Yunnan actively promotes the integration of coffee and tourism industries, and creates new consumption scenarios such as coffee estates and coffee markets. This not only expands the development space of the coffee industry, but also promotes the dissemination of coffee culture and enhances the brand influence of Yunnan coffee.
