72 hours, 2700 kilometers. Logistics transformation behind Yunnan coffee’s “Journey out of Yunnan”

Beijing, April 18th – As April approaches, the coffee fresh fruit picking work for the 2024-2025 season in Pu'er City, Yunnan Province has ended. On the mountain road, one after another, large trucks from all over the country continuously transport coffee beans that have been picked and processed from their production areas to various parts of the country. Data from the digital freight platform shows that in 2024, Yunnan will transport over 100000 tons of coffee to other provinces, with a year-on-year increase of 137.7% in transportation volume. Among them, Pu'er City ranks first in terms of coffee bean shipments.

Digital freight platform fully supports Yunnan coffee transportation

Two way journey from the place of origin to the place of consumption, setting up a 'through train'

Yunnan Yunda Coffee Co., Ltd., located in Nandaohe Village, Nanping Town, Simao District, Pu'er City, has built a domestically leading modern standard factory building covering an area of 7 acres. According to the company's person in charge, Shi Bin, this automated coffee bean initial processing and selection production line, which cost nearly 7 million yuan to build, can process up to 150 tons of coffee beans per day.

Yunda Coffee Automated Production Line

It is reported that the first grade coffee beans being produced for Suzhou Jinmao Coffee Co., Ltd. are fresh fruits purchased from coffee farmers, washed and dried, and then sent here for shelling, screening, packaging, and delivery to Suzhou by truck drivers. At this moment, outside the factory, Shi Bin had booked a 17.5-meter truck from the Yunman platform and had already arrived early, waiting in line for loading. Mr. Yang, a truck driver born in 1985, has been in the freight industry for more than 20 years and travels between Yunnan and the Yangtze River Delta all year round.

In 2022, Master Yang met shipper Shi Bin through the Yunmanman platform. Due to his rich experience in freight transportation and good service attitude, whenever Shi Bin had transportation needs upon arrival in Yunnan, he would assign orders to Master Yang through the Yunmanman platform's order function. The two have been working together for almost 4 years.

On the evening of April 2nd, Mr. Yang drove a truck loaded with coffee beans from Yunda Coffee, heading south into Guangxi, passing through Hunan and Jiangxi, and finally entering Suzhou, Jiangsu from Deqing, Zhejiang. On the afternoon of April 5th, he arrived at the Jinmao Coffee warehouse, covering a total distance of over 2700 kilometers, and was delivered as scheduled within 72 hours. Subsequently, the shipper Shi Bin, who was far away in Yunnan, also received a transaction completion reminder pushed by the Yunmanman APP.

Master Yang stated that this is the fourth time this year that coffee beans have been transported from Pu'er. In 2024, he will make seven round trips to transport coffee beans from Yunnan to the Yangtze River Delta region. According to data from Yunmanman platform, the most popular transportation route for Yunnan coffee out of Yunnan is from Pu'er to Suzhou.

From Difficulty in Getting Out of the Mountains to Worry Free Trading Yunnan Coffee Digital Upgrade

In 2022, in order to be closer to the origin of coffee, Shi Bin relocated his coffee trading company from Kunming to Pu'er and established Yunda Coffee, mainly engaged in coffee primary processing and selection, as well as import and export trade of coffee beans. The leading automated production equipment has been put into operation locally, achieving an annual sales scale of 1500 tons.

Shi Bin introduced that the initial processing of coffee beans has achieved automation instead of manual labor, and there have been earth shaking changes in logistics and transportation. Yunnan region has high mountains, long roads, and inconvenient transportation. In the past, traditional logistics models required multiple transfers for coffee bean transportation, resulting in long transportation times, susceptibility to moisture or damage, which restricted the sales of coffee beans.

According to Shi Bin's recollection, more than 20 years ago, logistics transportation resources were very scarce, and many areas used trailer machines to transport coffee beans. At that time, the transaction volume was only two or three tons at a time, and it was necessary to wait for logistics company vehicles to pick up the goods at home, with many uncertainties and slow delivery times.

In 2015, through the introduction of peers, Shi Bin began using the Yunmanman platform to find cars and ship goods. At first, he was also worried about the risks of online transactions. As orders were delivered on time, Shi Bin felt the "reliability" of the Yunmanman platform.

A truckload of beans is worth nearly 2 million yuan. Transporting them from Pu'er to Suzhou can save about 3000 yuan compared to traditional logistics companies. In addition to reducing costs, the entire process from finding a car, placing an order to delivery can be traced, ensuring the safety of the goods and meeting my invoicing needs. It is very worry free

Mr. Yang said that the transportation of coffee beans should be particularly careful, and the rain cloth must be tightly wrapped to ensure that the coffee beans are protected from rain and dirt. Master Yang usually needs to change the rain cloth every three months, and in the past two years, he has changed more than 10 pieces of rain cloth.

Dual empowerment enables shippers to save money and drivers to balance their earnings

According to public information from the Yunnan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the core coffee bean production areas in Yunnan are mainly Pu'er, Baoshan, Lincang, Dehong, Xishuangbanna, and other places. With the rise of the coffee industry, the popularity and quality of Yunnan coffee beans have both increased.

Data shows that by 2024, the planting area of Pu'er coffee will reach 679000 mu, with a yield of 58000 tons. Last year, the sales scale of Yunda Coffee was nearly 5000 tons, and it is expected to exceed 6000 tons this year. As a result, the demand for whole vehicle logistics transportation of coffee beans from their origin to their destination has increased.

More and more coffee merchants, like Shi Bin, are choosing to use the Yunmanman app to reduce transit and transport coffee beans directly from their planting bases to various parts of the country. According to data from the Yunmanman platform, coffee beans from Yunnan are mainly shipped to Jiangsu, Guangxi, Shanghai, Guangdong, Fujian and other places. From the perspective of coffee bean production areas, coffee beans grown in Pu'er are mainly shipped to Suzhou, Nantong, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Zhangzhou and other places. The coffee beans from Baoshan are mainly transported to Shanghai, Suzhou, Qinzhou, Baoding, Yantai and other places.

According to data from Yunman, the major coffee consuming provinces in China are mainly concentrated along the eastern coast, with Jiangsu, Shanghai, Fujian, and Guangdong being the undisputed coffee consuming provinces. Yunnan coffee beans are supported by a huge logistics system from their origin to consumers' cups across the country and even the world. Yunman is fully transported through the sinking source area, breaking the "first mile" of logistics transportation and building an efficient and matched high-quality driver transportation pool for coffee farmers, buyers, processing plants, etc., directly reaching consumer destinations and smoothing the entire supply chain.

In addition, Yunmanman continuously upgrades product functions and service standards through data intelligence and network collaboration, builds a driver growth system and a shipper credit system, and constructs a solid trust moat. Help shippers save money and make drivers earn money. More and more shippers and drivers are truly experiencing the practical effects of using the Yunman platform to reduce costs and increase efficiency. Master Yang said that from Pu'er to Suzhou, after deducting various expenses such as tolls and fuel costs, one trip can earn more than 4000 yuan.
