Upgrading the coffee industry in Baoshan, Yunnan: from “roadside stalls” to boutique products, with a comprehensive output value exceeding 22.3 billion yuan

According to the Yunnan Provincial Department of Commerce, Baoshan City in Yunnan Province has achieved high-quality development of the coffee industry by innovating service formats, promoting high-quality planting, and strengthening full industry chain services. By the end of 2025, the comprehensive output value of Baoshan coffee industry has exceeded 22.3 billion yuan, and the average income of coffee farmers has exceeded 100000 yuan. The rate of high-quality products and deep processing in the industry has significantly increased.

Roadside cafes have become popular, with service experience becoming key

In Mangkuan Yi and Dai Ethnic Township, Longyang District, Baoshan City, a "roadside caf é" has been attracting tourists since last year due to its unique craftsmanship and ceremonial sense of brewing coffee with a spray gun. According to Li Jinhe, the operator, the core of attraction lies in the service experience of "strong visual impact, suitable for Internet communication". This shift from simply selling products to providing experiential services has become a common trend in the local coffee industry. For example, Gongjiang Coffee Plantation in Xinzhai Village generates revenue by providing experiential projects such as strolling, overlooking canyons, and hands-on planting before the coffee trees reach their peak fruiting season.

Industrial Transformation: From Being Constrained by Price Fluctuations to Striving for High Quality Products

In the past, Baoshan coffee farmers planted various commodity beans that were greatly affected by international futures prices, and their returns were minimal when prices were low. To reduce the impact of price fluctuations in the international market, Baoshan promotes the development of industries towards high-quality and distinctive products. The key measure is to change the planting and picking habits, such as guiding coffee farmers to single pick premium coffee beans, and improving planting standards through organizing training and allowing coffee farmers to personally experience quality differences. During the 14th Five Year Plan period, the premium rate of Baoshan coffee increased from 10% to 75%, and the deep processing rate increased from 30% to 90%.

Full chain services support high-quality development of industries

Baoshan promotes the integration of the primary, secondary, and tertiary coffee industries by strengthening full chain services. Specific support includes:

1. Improve infrastructure and business models: Relevant departments guide compliant operations, add parking lots, public toilets and other facilities, and drive surrounding farmers to improve supporting business models such as barbecue and cold drinks.

2. Strengthen logistics and e-commerce support: From 2024 to 2025, the coffee delivery business will exceed 10 million units, and e-commerce platform sales will reach nearly 600 million yuan.

3. Innovative financial and insurance services: Financial institutions have launched products such as "coffee loans" and "price insurance", issuing a total of 650 million yuan in loans and providing 80.23 million yuan in insurance project funds.

4. Improve the level of agricultural services: From manual grass cutting to quality assurance, to providing technical services such as drone (885564) flight defense and standardized planting, to ensure the production of high-quality coffee.

The practice of Baoshan coffee industry has shown that from meeting product demand to providing high-quality services and unique experiences, it is an effective path to enhance industry value and achieve high-quality development.
